Preference Packer is a powerful and useful utility to help you keep your system clean and help prevent crashing.

It will search your Preference Folder and get a list of all the orphaned preferences. Preference Packer achieves this by getting a list of all the preference files and checks to see that the application which created it is still present.

Preference Packer is very easy to use. You start by press Begin, then select the files to move and where to move them to and Preference Packer will take care of the rest.

FAQ

  1. Does this work in Mac OS X?

No. Mac OS X uses a different style of preference management. Therefore Preference Packer will not work. However if you are using OS 9 within OS X then Preference Packer should still be used for the OS 9 side.

  2. What happens if I delete a preference file that is still needed?

If you delete a file that was needed then some settings may be lost. This may be OK for some applications but others it could be very bad. For instance, if you delete a setting for your Internet dialing application you may have to find the phone number and other settings for your modem to get it working again. In other cases, if you delete the preference file for Joe Shmoo App you may only loose a setting like what color should the background be. This may not be as difficult to reconfigure. So use caution before just deleting found preferences.

  3. Why is Preference Packer 2.0 slower in checking preferences?

Preference Packer 2.0 does a more comprehensive check then version 1.1. This checking sequence allows Preference Packer to be more accurate in its search which will ultimately minimize any inconsistencies. Since many applications don't follow the standard when writing their preference file, Preference Packer has to check many different areas for every preference file in the preference folder.

  4. Why should I bother to use Preference Packer?

Preference Packer helps automate tasks which attempt to minimize corrupt files, application failures and wasted space on your hard drive. It is a tedious and time consuming task to go through your preference folder and figure out what preference files you are no longer using. Preference Packer handles the work for you. Thus, you gain drive space back and this can also help in solving some minor problems with corrupt files and application failures.
